  1. Morning all. It's Battleground Brown County here as the hummingbirds fight for Supreme Ruler of the Feeder on the Left. The dude who hides in the leaves of the redbud tree so he can fool the innocents* into thinking there's no one around and then zoom out in a surprise attack is winning the war.

  2. Good morning to everyone.

My primary complaint today is regarding my cable company's inability to get its equipment to function if a single drop of rain falls from the sky. I probably shouldn't complain, as this is much better than E's dad's situation in which they lose power pretty much every time we hear thunder, but since it has been rainy here my DVR has scrambled roughly half of what it has recently recorded, including the last episode of Orphan Black. Normally, the episodes are available on demand shortly after they air, but at present the ondemand thinger is borked as well and is only offering random episodes. ::shakes impotent fists of fury:: I've been irritated about this for roughly 48 hours but I have a dental appointment early this morning so I have to go be irritated about something else and let this sort itself out.

Hope you're all having a more pleasant and functional experience in general! :)

    1. That is a major bummer. I hope they get it sorted out soon because I can't wait to read your reaction.

P.S. Good luck at the dentist (where I guess "good luck" means "I hope it doesn't hurt too much").

  3. Hey all! DD sent pix of the Bandaged Idiot. Now he looks like an extra in The Mummy, someone who hasn't been completely wrapped up yet. I'm trying to get an OK to use them on the blawg.

Jen, I work for one of the major arms suppliers in the cable industry. Rain problems are normal for satellite, as water absorbs those particular frequencies. If it's cable, if rain's getting in somewhere, there's signal getting out. The cable company usually considers that a Very Bad Thing, as it means someone nearby could get free cable by pointing an antenna the right way (and there's FCC regulations to worry about).

So here's what you do, if you have the stuff. Put a loop antenna on a portable TV, and take a stroll around the neighborhood. Follow your cable drop to the metal boxes on the utility poles; that's the most likely place for leakage. If you find it, call the cable company and tell them they have signal leaking out at such-and-such. None of this "somewhere between 9 and 3" stuff; I'll bet a donut they'll have a truck out there in an hour & a half. :-) And that should clear up the rain problem.

    1. lol @ "bandaged idiot"

Thanks for the advice, Larry. We've had the cable guys out a few times and while there doesn't seem to be leak/theft, we do have some weird wiring going on requiring the use of a signal booster as well as some kind of signal leveler that I don't entirely understand but which they told us we'd need unless we re-wired the cable entirely, from the pole all the way through, which, NOPE, if it goes all the way down we'll just get a dish. :)

  4. FYI, the Nerdist Writers Panel podcast this week features the creators of Orphan Black.

And I am now also finished with OITNB Season 2. :)
