Booker T. and W.E.B.
by Dudley Randall

“It seems to me,” said Booker T.,
“It shows a mighty lot of cheek
To study chemistry and Greek
When Mister Charlie needs a hand
To hoe the cotton on his land,
And when Miss Ann looks for a cook,
Why stick your nose inside a book?”

“I don’t agree,” said W.E.B.,
“If I should have the drive to seek
Knowledge of chemistry or Greek,
I’ll do it. Charles and Miss can look
Another place for hand or cook.
Some men rejoice in skill of hand,
And some in cultivating land,
But there are others who maintain
The right to cultivate the brain.”

“It seems to me,” said Booker T.,
“That all you folks have missed the boat
Who shout about the right to vote,
And spend vain days and sleepless nights
In uproar over civil rights.
Just keep your mouths shut, do not grouse,
But work, and save, and buy a house.”

“I don’t agree,” said W.E.B.,
“For what can property avail
If dignity and justice fail.
Unless you help to make the laws,
They’ll steal your house with trumped-up clause.
A rope’s as tight, a fire as hot,
No matter how much cash you’ve got.
Speak soft, and try your little plan,
But as for me, I’ll be a man.”

“It seems to me,” said Booker T.—
“I don’t agree,”
Said W.E.B.

  1. But in the end, aren't the contributions of both equally (pun not intended) necessary?

Our Evil Twin friend ended up spending the weekend here, maybe tomorrow as well. It's good to have a little help with Mason. ;-) It also gives me the chance to show her Linux as a replacement for her non-booting dozeware… she seems amenable to the prospect. Just have to figure out how to burn her essential data with a boot CD in the drive. :-P

Janet, what's Danni's Tumblr? I've got one of those too (farmanor of course). I mostly use it to upload pix from my phone or reblog other stuff.

Mason's parked in the comfy chair watching Cars 2 so I'm trying to catch up on stuff. Later!

  2. Okay, poetry point taken and all that, but chemistry AND Greek AND poli-sci would be The Semester That Ate My Entire Brainmeats. :)

Larry, can you plug in any additional writable drive temporarily? Any compatible CD/DVD drive & various types of hard drives could be workable. One of my backup hard drives connects via USB so that makes this sort of thing pretty easy, but you may have to pop the cover and plug something directly into the mobo. If that's doable, you should be able to boot off the one functioning drive, maybe haveta mess around a little bit with recognition of the new temp drive since I don't know how well "safe mode boot" will "find new hardware" on its own, and then burn to t'other. (Assuming that the data is intact and her hard drive hasn't given up the ghost.)

You may also have to persuade Evil Twin friend to paint her belly with the Windows logo and then go dance naked under the 3/4 waxing moon while giving various offerings to Bill Gates to make it all work right, so I hope she's down with that. ;p

  3. Again with the lovely picture!

Farf, Tumblr is another way of networking. I don't find it as easy as Facebook and use it mostly to track pictures not words (if that makes sense.) More like LiveJournal for pictures.

I have a lot of problems with Facebook but it does work fairly well.

Hope everyone is having a good Sunday.
